Prints and Patterns – Continental book-cover designs
These elaborate designs are from 1920s German book-covers. In Britain, at the time, books were commonly bound in cloth whereas in Germany attractively designed papers were put to the same purpose. This type of decoration was the inspiration behind the patterned paper covers used by many British publishers in the nineteen forties and fifties. ‘King Penguins’ are perhaps the best known.
